Cincinnati's longest-running Halloween pickleball party moved into the city's newest room. Monster Smash 2026 — billed as “A Frighteningly Fun Tournament” — ran Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25 at The Pickle Lodge at Lunken Landing, 669 Wilmer Ave. Entry was $60 per player on PickleballTournaments.com, and the field passed 250 registered players before registration closed.
Why this year's edition is a big deal
A new home. Monster Smash spent its recent editions at The Pickle Lodge's North Shore location in West Chester. This year it drops into Lunken Landing — the 60,000-square-foot, 17-court flagship on Cincinnati's east side that was completed in September, stadium courts and all. A Halloween tournament is a stress test for any venue; Lunken Landing gets a big one six weeks after opening.
A real field. More than 250 players were on the registration list with two weeks still left before the deadline — and the number kept climbing every time the listing updated. For scale: the sixth-annual edition in 2025 expected roughly 350 players across the weekend. This one is tracking in that direction, indoors, where October weather can't touch it.
Costumes are not a gimmick here — they're the point. Monster Smash has always run on a simple formula: serious brackets, unserious outfits. Costume contests sit alongside the medal rounds, and the tournament has leaned into the Halloween theme harder every year it's run.
Seven years of the Smash
The tournament's arc is basically the story of Cincinnati pickleball in miniature:
- The early years started small at Clear Creek Park — roughly 60 players, heavy on costumes.
- 2021 brought a Cincinnati Pickleball Club edition at the C-TEC courts at Withrow High School, a one-day mixed-doubles scramble where players registered solo and drew a partner of similar skill on arrival.
- 2022's third annual moved to the riverfront: three days at a newly renovated Sawyer Point, adding men's singles, Super Senior (60+) divisions, and a first-ever collegiate division, with live music after play.
- 2024's fifth annual settled in at The Pickle Lodge North Shore — 17 indoor courts dressed up for Halloween — and the weekend grew to include Spooky Spokes, a wheelchair pickleball event run with the US Wheelchair Pickleball Association that drew athletes from across the country.
- 2025's sixth annual drew an expected 350+ players back to North Shore.
- 2026 takes the seventh edition to Lunken Landing.
